Member Codes Of Conduct
The Den Games Network Forums is a place where fans of the DEN websites from all over the world, from many different backgrounds, minorities and cultures, can come together and discuss amongst themselves in the many topical sections we have available. In order to keep the forums running well and prevent problems, we staff ask you to take these rules into account when participating in these forums so that all members can coexist peacefully.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions regarding these rules or any other aspect of the DGN Forums. Please do not hesitate to Private Message a staff member or ask publicly in the Ask DGN Staff forum section.

Our aim is to be one big happy family at the DGNF and by providing these simple rules - this aim can be easily achieved.

The DGN Staff reserve the right to add to, modify, move, delete, merge or split any thread/post without notice.

Thanks
~DGN Staff

(NOTE: Rules are listed in alphabetical order according to heading)

Advertising
The forum section Community Bulletin Board is provided for anyone wanting to do friendly advertising of a site, product, event or anything else topical that is freely available to anyone. No advertising threads/posts are permitted outside this forum. Inappropriate advertising that is not tolerated anywhere includes:
  • Advertising or soliciting forum members to buy any products or services through this forum is not permitted.
  • Links to sexually explicit or obscene websites and content.
  • Links to warez and other piracy-related content.
  • Links to sites that can cause harm to one's computer.
Offending topics will be edited and locked and the creator warned (if applicable).

Cloning
Members are only permitted to own ONE forum account. Any member that is caught having duplicate accounts without staff knowledge are immediately warned and the duplicate accounts locked.

Discrimination
Inappropriate comments on any part of the forums discriminating someone because of their race, background, religion and other issues are certainly NOT permitted on the DGNF. We want the forums to be an enjoyable place for everyone and that they do have to put up with these sorts of comments. The offending comments will be removed and the user warned.

Flaming
Flames are posts that are meant to be deliberately defamatory, abusive, harassing, threatening or insulting to a person, place or thing. Flaming is permitted in one forum only, the Flamerz Corner, and there are certain guidelines that you must adhere to should you wish you post there:
  • Do not go overboard with swearing, flaming does not necessarily have to involve you using profanity every third word, and it makes you look more of a fool than the person/thing you're directing your flames at.
  • If someone is flaming you, use intelligence in your replies, don't simply post a sentence that rebuts nothing, it will just make you look like an idiot and the flames against you even more acceptable.
  • Remember, flaming is like a debate, intelligence is the key, you need to outsmart your opponent(s) so they back down.
  • Use proper spelling and grammar, there is nothing worse than a flame that it badly typed and is full of spelling mistakes.
  • Do not stoop to personal or 'low blow' replies done solely just to incite the other person and have no contributing value to the actual topic of the flame.
Threads that descend into breaking these guidelines will be locked, and members who persistantly disobey these guidelines may also be warned.

Insubordination
The Staff are here to ensure these rules get followed to maintain a healthy atmosphere on the forums. They are not here to take any abuse you may dish out as a result of them doing their job. If you have a dispute with a staff decision that you really want to discuss, contact the Staff member by Private Message in a civilised and courteous manner to find out the reasoning behind any decision made. If this does not get anywhere, contact an Administrator to look into the matter.

However, do not create a public thread flaming a staff member for a decision he may have made, or behave like that in your private enquiries. That will remove any chances of a past decision being overturned and will result in your being warned again.

Malicious Use
From time to time things may happen on the forums which may cause bugs or glitches in the software, or give you abilities to do things you should not normally be able to do. Members are strictly forbidden to abuse these in any way, or to do things that would result in something like this happening, and will result in your immediate ban from these forums.

Members are also not allowed to post links to sites knowingly containing viruses, spyware, adware etc. which can damage or disrupt the operation of their computer.

Accessing another member's account without their permission is also considered a major malicious action and is forbidden.

Pornography
ANY sexually explicit or otherwise obscene material displayed on the forums is NOT acceptable. These forums are family-oriented, suitable for all ages so we treat this very seriously! The offending material will be deleted on sight and the user warned, with varying severity depending on the type of pornography posted.

Privacy
Everyone of these forums has a right to their own privacy. No information that is private and personal towards two people (e.g Instant Message conversation, E-Mail, PMs, Pagers etc.) can be posted against the other members will or without permission. Posts that do this will instantly be deleted and the creator warned.

Profanity
While we are not that strict on the use of profanity in posts, we do ask that it be kept to a minimum outside the Flamerz Corner. Some of the worst swear words are even censored by the forum, and so deliberately bypassing the swearing filter on words that are normally censored is not permitted. Going overboard on the bad language outside the Flamerz Corner is frowned upon. The offending user may be warned.

Religion
We understand the precarious and controversial nature of Religion-based topics and debates in general, and so we do not want any material on these forums created anywhere that are bound to incite flames and debate between differentially opinioned members. Comments that illustrate this will be removed, and (if the comment is an attack on opinion), the creator warned.

Topics that can relate to religion (e.g. News reporting) will be closely monitored to make sure it stays civil, and will be closed the moment it starts getting out of hand.

Smilies
Smilies (or Emoticons) are provided by the forums as a means of expressing your emotions though small images. They are there for your convenience and you are not permitted to abuse them. That includes overusing them to the point where the post becomes useless, or enough to lag to other member's computers who try and view them.

Spambox
The Shoutbox aka Spambox is available as a place where people can post in a more relaxed environment where the Spamming rules are more leniently applied. This is the only place on the forums where things are more lenient, although that is not stopping you from carrying out meaningful conversations in it at times!

However even though spam is allowed in the Spambox it doesn't mean you can abuse it to prevent others from effectively reading what's going on in there. That includes mass word and smilie posts (that also often lag computers), posts using large font sizes and posts discussing topics that are not allowed in the rest of the forum.

Spamming
According to www.dictionary.com, spam is typically described as: Unsolicited messages, often of a commercial nature, sent indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups; junk e-mail. Keeping this definition in mind, we consider spam on these forums to be:
  • Repetitive posts: Member's posting multiple times in the same topic, the exact same thing in multiple topics, or multiple threads on the same topic deliberately.
  • Nonsense posts: Posts/Threads that totally do not make any sense and have no point to them.
  • Short posts: Repetitive postings that adds nothing to the discussion at hand (one word or short posts, a lone smilie etc.) unless the topic specifies it.
  • Off-topic posts: If the thread starter specifically asks not for their thread to go off topic, those posts that do are considered spam.
Posts that abuse the use of smilies (see above) are spam and will be treated like it. Spam threads/posts will be deleted on sight and the user often warned.

Additionally there is a specific forum where we are more liberal on some aspects of spam. The Spam Dump was created specifically so threads that caused some controversy amongst members (while normally perfectly acceptable under the spam rules) would have a home separate from normal discussions. Regardless of what the forum is called, all these spam rules still apply. It is here solely for those topics that often require less intelligence to reply to.

Warez
Topics relating to violating intellectual property law and providing/asking for information on how to obtain material protected by intellectual property law is strictly forbidden (including material that is used to assist in this, eg. keygens, serial numbers etc.), especially towards the games we cover specifically on these forums. This includes programs which unofficially and unfairly alter games where you are not allowed to (eg. trainers, hacks etc.)

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I spot a rule violation?

While we have a dedicated and active moderation team, we cannot possibly spot every single rule violation on the forums. Therefore we do want other members to report untouched violations if they see any so that we may be called upon to respond. Do not let any unsure feelings about whether it is a clear cut violation or not persuade you from reporting a violation, as it is always better to safe than sorry.

To inform us of a rule violation, use the button in the offending post to report that post to all the staff. Alternatively you can view the Forum Leaders page and send a Private Message or Email directly to a single staff member. Depending on how many staff are currently online or how long it takes before one comes online, any action that may be taken against the offender may take time.
What happens if I break the rules?

We have incorporated an Infraction System here at the forums to ensure a fair, consistent and archival way of punishing people. Upon registration, each Member has an Infraction Point count. It begins at 0, and if you break the rules mentioned above you will be warned by the staff which will increase your points depending upon the seriousness of the offense and any past offenses you have committed. Sometimes you may simply get a Warning, which is an Infraction but it does not actually increase your Infraction Point count.

Should your Infraction Point count reach 10, you will be automatically banned from using the forum. The length of time varies depending upon the collective seriousness of your offenses. Our practice is for the ban to be three months in length, but should the offense(s) be particularly severe, or that you are already on a second chance from a previous ban, the ban is permanent from that point on. Be aware that for some major offenses you will automatically be stuck on a permanent ban no matter what chance you are on, as does re-registering to bypass a first-time ban.

You can view your own Infractions in your profile if you have any to keep track of, but no one else's. Staff members may leave comments when warning you detailing any specifics which are sent to you via Private Message, and you will also be informed of the post the Infraction applies too (if any).
I want to change my nickname! What can I do?

If you wish to change your username of your existing account you may contact a staff member, but if your proposed name change is something completely different from your current nick or any nicks you have used in the recent past on these forums, we will not allow it due to the confusion it raises in other members.

If your request is denied, you are permitted to re-register under your new proposed nickname where we will then lock out your old account.
Do you have any suggestions to help make sure that I don't break these rules?

Especially to those members who are new to using a forum system, all these rules may be quite daunting and you may be frightened that you might accidentally break one of them without knowing. Whether this is the case or you just want to know how to effectively become part of this community, here are a number of suggestions that you should take into account when posting:
  • First off, before you post a thread, make sure the topic hasn't already been discussed in the past. The forums have a Search function allowing you to scan through all current threads and posts. If you just want to read up on the topic this is the best option available. However, if you want to contribute to the topic, make sure the topic isn't too old as we generally dislike members who bring up old topics. If the topic is an old one (usually over a month), feel free to create a new one with your enquiry.
  • When posting, take note that submitting a post is just like speaking in a crowded room. Use common sense just as you would in social gatherings. Think before you post. If you find yourself doubting what you are about to post, it is probably better not to post it. Don't be impulsive. Remember: For every action there is a reaction.
  • This is a family-oriented forum. Meaning there are people here of all kinds of ages, races and genders. Take this into account when you are about to post in order to prevent some of the most serious rule violations detailed above. Be civil.
  • Especially if you are asking a question or want advise, be clear and concise in your postings, and make sure your question really applies to the topic at hand. This is for your benefit, as the clearer your query is, the easier it is for other members to understand it and respond with what you need.
  • If you are going to post about something that could be considered a 'spoiler' (as in a message that divulges information intended to be a surprise e.g. a plot twist in a movie), please use the Spoiler vB Code to hide your message by default.
We hope these guidelines help to get you on the road to being a respected and well-liked member of the forums.
