Lion's Final Blurb  - The end has come, and time for me to leave the C&C community. My life off the net gets rather hectic at times, leaving me with little time to keep the DEN websites updated properly, so it's time to hang up my webmaster title. Anyhoot, I've had a great time over these many years covering Command & Conquer games, and I will miss that. Thanks to all for visiting and supporting the DEN websites and forums...Lion

Inside the Music of Tiberian Twilight

C&C4 News icon

On the official C&C4 website, APOC has posted up a little blog from Audio Director for Command & Conquer 4, Nick Laviers. Here's a snip from that blog:
Hello, Nick Laviers here, Audio Director for Command & Conquer 4 (you may remember me from Red Alert 3). For the last couple of weeks since we finished Tiberian Twilight I've been priming our official Soundtrack for iTunes release (Amazon and the rest) on the day the game ships. I’m really pleased with the way it's turned out and excited about getting it into your hands and finding out what you think of it. This is the first of a series of three blogs where I'm going to give away some extra info about the work of each of the three composers. First up is James Hannigan and the work he did on creating melodic 'themes' for the game.
Head HERE for the full blog.

If I wanted a star wars game, I'd be in love with the C&C4 GDI music, fact is, I'm a C&C fan, I wanted C&C music (quite surprisingly) and I didn't get that (being a beta tester I know).

I feel C&C4 was made with ignorance of where the series came from in the first place. C&C used to be famous for its music, surprisingly that went downhill since C&C3...

Agreed. There is a total lack of understanding in how much the music has meant to C&C. Ever since RA2, the series has lost its artistic style. You would have to be blind, and in this case deaf not to see that.

Well I have to say, I even look back to the C&C Generals music with rose tinted glasses.

fact is, 'dynamic' music is so much less enjoyable, initially it logically sounds like the way forward, but the problem is that music isn't a main feature of the game, players don't take risks just to hear the 'cool' music, that is, music doesn't work as a 'reward' in games.

Fact is, and its almost a historically fact, music is an inspirational medium, it influences somebody to do something, that's why the classic music did so well.

When you were sitting on your ass in Red Alert and you heard Hell March come on, didn't it influence you to roll out the tanks from the factory and attack?

I just went and listened to all the soundtrack samples. I think I heard some faint guitars in 1 track. The rest sounds like I thought it would. What happened to getting Frank Klepacki involved, like they did RA3?

Waraddict,

Totally agree, dynamic music is ruining music in games. Having a track list with the ability to play whatever song you liked was so great.

Dynamic music just takes more skill to pull off. It is great if done well.

the music was meh ok but it lacked seriously in the rock n roll department biggrin
Its really obvious klepacki wasn't in this production at all.
But I dunno the battlestar galactica esque tracks where pretty decent :)
Would suit Generals 2 for the GLA side maybe wink
Hope they make a new engine or some big overhaul on the current one and make a awesome Generals 2 with all the features of the old one + add new stuff like speed option in Mp and more game modes and add twice amount of units to the game and aircraft 4 all sides this time :)
Seriously the GLA side could come flying in with some old school mig-21's while china do their mig 27's or su 28's or whatyever, and the Allied aka USA will go in with a mixed basket of awesome!
I mean if the team could use all the lessons learned from C&C3 and red alert 3 and make a kick ass generals 2 game it would rock the sox!

"Dynamic music just takes more skill to pull off. It is great if done well."

I tried, but I can't think of even one example where dynamic music works. More often than not it just pisses me off by switching to a very loud track during combat. Especially in Western RPGs, where I'd rather just enjoy the atmosphere the ambient area music creates.

Stage/area/map themes and playlists are universally better in my opinion.

Oh, and the soundtrack sounds more like something out of Total Annihilation or Supreme Commander, not C&C. The GDI part that is.

The Nod music sounds like something you'd hear during a very actiony scene in a summer blockbuster movie. It's also really repetitive. There's no variety whatsoever. I guess I can chalk that one up to the dynamicness of it all, since the pieces have to fit together.

*sigh* I'm starting to lose all hope in the Western video game music scene...

OK so i have listen though the track a bit more carefully now. The problem is not for me that is a good or bad track. The problem for me is that it does not feel like a Command and Conqueror track. Wile some would probably argue that it would fit better with the more serious tone of the game that just makes things worse considering the cartoonish looks of the in game graphics.

Even so i would argue that the classic style can be pulled off in a serious manner.

There are tracks there a really like however. I like the Kane Theme for example. It has a interesting feel to it. It is a track i can remember unlike most of what is on the list.

Btw the soundtrack to Total Annihilation was great and a lot more dynamic then this. It seems the biggest problem with these orchestra style music is that they lack character. There undynamic and uncreative not pushing any limits.

I thought the music in generals was great. i dont even remember cnc3 or ra3 music, dont think i heard cnc4. one mod that had some good music was tiberian sun rising, a few of those tracks were pretty damned good.

The music reminds me of BF2142. It's ok but could have been so much better.

this game is fail. its over. someone will just put these things up somewhere and everyone who doesnt want to play it will get to finish the story.

I just wish we got to finish the story in a dignified manner.guess not. looks like C&C ill end on a bad note. but hey well finally know who and what kane is...etc. right? i mean, lets try and look at the glass being half full. ofcourse by half I mean the story half, not the gameplay half cause im not even going to start on that again. were just repeating ourselves now needlessly.

It makes kinda sense, they researched way more advanced form of space travel thanks to Scrin technology. Start menu kinda shows it.

This might also be prequel to what lead to GDI and what remains of Nod space exploration and eventually to face Scrin in other planets.

Yeah i think is likely they will push it there onces the Kane arch as they call it ends. Of course i bet there will really not be that much of a Tiberium game after that. It will be something else.

To be honest the game lost is way a bit already with Tiberium Sun. But Sun manage to pull it off due to the changes they made still where interesting and explored more on what Tiberium was doing with the world. The future aspect of the game did make it a bit distant form the almost in the now story of the original. There are great strength in having a story be about what is just behind the corner.
