Chapter 3: Texture Tools

Chapter 3 brings us to the texture painting tools Screenshot 25. These tools from left to right consist of "Single Tile" brush, "Large Tile" (multi-tile), "Eyedropper", "Floodfill", and the "Auto edge out" tools.

Looking at Screenshot 26 we can see that to select a texture we simply click on the "single tile" tool and then select the texture we want to use from the Terrain Materials menu that appears. To apply the texture scroll the mouse to the working area and then hold down the left button and pass it over the terrain. The texture will be applied where ever the brush has passed. The "large tile" tool operates in the exact same fashion with the exception of the ability to specify a brush size. Looking at the Terrain Materials Options we can see that there is box for adjusting the Brush width. Again you can either enter in the size manually or use the slider. Looking more closely at the Terrain Materials dialogue box Screenshot 27 you will note that by checking the box labeled "Paint passable/impassable terrain", that you can effectively make flat ground impassable and inversely make impassable (cliffs) terrain passable.

Next we have the "Eyedropper". You should all be familiar with the operation of the eyedropper tool. It is used to sample, or select, textures already applied to the terrain thus pre-selecting a texture for you when reselecting the single or large tile brushes.

The "Floodfill" tool will flood an area with the texture selected in the Terrain materials menu. Quite handy when large areas are to be painted.

The final tool in this discussion is the "Auto Edge Out" tool. This where the alpha blending takes place. By clicking on this tool and placing the blend cursor over an unblended tile or block of tiles it will blend the textures one to the other. See before and after.

This concludes Chapter 3...
